Are Socks And Slides Acceptable?

Over the years, we have certainly seen many changes in fashion.  I remember a day when I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing slides with socks, but I see more and more people wearing their slides with socks…

Slides are a beach shoe.  Slides are a casual water shoe.  What the heck happened, are socks and slides really acceptable now?

Wearing socks with slides is completely acceptable.  If you feel good and your socks feel good when you are wearing your slides, then you are A-OK!  Slides are a great shoe to “slide-on” after playing a game of basketball or soccer and having your feet all cramped up an sweaty!

Fashion has changed and we’ve got to change with it.  Today it’s more about our comfort than what “looks good”, not that I’m saying that slides and socks doesn’t look good. (maybe I am).  Let’s look at the history…

Wearing Socks and Slides: Trend and History

Over 2000 years ago, the Romans wore socks with sandals.  There is evidence of socks sewn with a split toe to accommodate the sandal post that fits between your big toe and the next four. (Source: Wikipedia).

In 2010, runway models started wearing socks with sandals.  The Daily Telegraph reported that “Socks and sandals are on trend for spring/summer 2010. Prior to this, socks were considered a faux pas.  How times slowly change. LOL.

In a news article, The Evening Sun depicts the custom of socks and sandals fashion among the old generation. According to Brian Shea, once it was popular among the Germans.

In the Pacific Northwest regions, a digital media company, The Daily Dot highlighted that the term “Socks and Sandals” entered into the search engine mostly by the Washingtonians.

The Socks and Slides Controversy

The question continues… is it appropriate to wear socks with slides or not. Our simple understanding (and perception) says it looks a little bit odd. But is it really so?

Professional Etiquette

In some countries wearing socks with slides is considered a professional look. Think about India.

In this area, when someone does not wear socks with slides, people think his/her feet are not in the right shape.

However, in America, slides are typically not allowed in office environment.  Slides are not in the dress code.

Some companies are beginning to break with these conventional rules. As this is getting a new trend, they are trying to normalize it in their workplaces.

Comfort

Some people wear socks with their slides because it’s just comfortable. The socks prevent your feet from rubbing against the slides (and therefore potentially prevents blisters).

As we put on shoes for the sake of comfort, wearing socks with slides is not a bad trend at all for extra-comfort.

Generational Fashion Choices

We observe different generation has different fashion trends. Showing your bare feet was considered as a bad taste in post-soviet Russia. On the other hand, old German people liked to put on slides (& sandals) with socks.

Young and old would “rock” socks and slides together without any controversy.

A new trend may be treated as a little bit odd by the conservative persons in society. But, over time new trends become customary.

The world is dynamic. Our choices are changing with the passage of time. So, you should accept all of those trends that are good at all.

Regional Appeal

Fashion styles are largely dependent on the regions we live in.

For example, the Pacific Northwest people are used to wear socks and slides together. It’s been a norm for many years.

In the United States, slides and socks has begun to immerse into the general population.  However, wearing slides with socks still hasn’t become an accepted dress code in professional environments, yet.

Celebrities

There are a large number of celebrities who are promoting this trend.

Kanye, Justin Bieber, David Beckham, and so many celebrities do this.

Hygiene

Some men wear socks and slides for hygiene purposes. Women are more conscious about their beauty, but men are not so much.

Wearing socks with your slides can protect your toes, wick away moisture from your feet and generally help with foot hygiene.
