The commitment and passion to creating the world's durable, comfortable, and best fitting socks are already passed on for three generations. They are the ones who design, manufacture, sell and promote high-quality Darn Tough socks. They have a promising lifetime guarantee for these socks; once worn out, they will replace them. As interesting as it seems, I have more to share; keep on reading to be informed.

What are Darn Tough Socks Made Of?

Darn Tough uses natural and synthetic fibers in each sock, such as Merino Wool, Recycled Nylon, Spandex, and Polyester. The material used by Darn Tough is tested and was carefully chosen to ensure the socks' durability. Darn Tough prioritizes the use of merino wool in all of its sock production.

To furtherly know more about the materials of the Darn Tough socks, I have listed some information below.

Merino Wool

Darn Tough has prioritized Merino wool for many years due to its high quality in wicking away the moisture, thermo-regulating capacity, durability, odor resistance, and renewable. In 2019, Darn Tough was committed to the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), a voluntary standard with strict protocols to protect the welfare of the animals and adhere to progressive and sustainable farming. The Merino Wool is one of the essential fibers Darn Tough uses in most of its products.

Recycled Nylon

To conserve energy, Darn Tough is using REPREVE®, a nylon fiber made from pre-consumer industrial waste. Typically the materials are to be landed in landfills and downcycled. Still, Darn Tough recycled these nylons to avoid using crude oil, benzene, cyclohexane, and other harmful hydrocarbons to produce virgin nylon fibers. Using recycled nylons helps conserve energy and water and helps the reduction of greenhouse gases.

Spandex/ Elastine

Darn Tough is using Lycra® in sock production to provide elasticity, strength, and form-fitting comfort. Spandex accumulates about 5% of the fiber in the finished product. Spandex is derived from petroleum which is very important in the performance of the product. Unfortunately, Spandex is the most difficult fiber to be replaced with a recycled alternative.

Polyester

Darn Tough uses Coolmax® and Thermolite® polyester fibers to combine with nylon and elastane to provide the customers with high and uncompromising performance and moisture-wicking socks without using merino wool. It is estimated that about 2.5% consumption of virgin Polyester is used in the material consumption by weight. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Darn Tough is replacing virgin Polyester with recycled Polyester.

Are Darn Tough Socks Wool?

Darn Tough socks prioritize the usage of merino wool in their sock production. However, there are some socks that are blended with synthetic fibers. Darn Tough uses wool that is a fine gauged, low micron 100% merino wool.

Moreover, some Darn Tough socks are blended with synthetic fibers like Spandex, Nylon, and Polyester. These synthetic fibers are added inside and outside the sock for additional comfort, durability, and fit. Darn Tough uses Merino Wool, Nylon, and Lycra, and Merino Wool comprises the most percentage of the overall sock production.

Though Merino wool has the best capacity in wicking away moisture, it is versatile in all-weather conditions and odor-resistant. However, it may not hold much fit, so Darn Tough adds Lycra and Nylon for strengthening wear zones. The blends add more durability to the overall sock quality.

Darn Tough makes sure the standard of Merino Wool is in their socks. They make sure that the merino wool they will be using for sock production is from sheep that haven't been exposed to mulesing. The company aims to produce high-performing socks intended for various activities, including indoor, outdoor, and casual socks that will suit your needs.

All socks are made with fine merino wool because it doesn't shrink. It takes color well, is durable, removes the moisture in your skin, and is naturally antimicrobial. The fine gauge yarns made from merino wool are formed in a fine gauged needle to create a product that fits your foot.
