Can Cowboy Boots Cause Hip Pain?

If you own a pair of cowboy boots or maybe you are considering a cowboy boot purchase, you may be curious if cowboy boots cause hip pain?

Cowboy boots are not known to cause hip pain. Most modern cowboy boots provide good arch support, are lightweight, the heel height ranges from 1 to 1.5 inches, which can help stretch (& relieve pain in) the plantar ligament on the sole of your foot. However, if your feet have underlying conditions, cowboy boots may cause hip pain.

The cowboy boot has become a more popular boot and are not just for cowboys anymore. You’ll see men and women wearing cowboy boots on the worksite, in the office, and when they are out on the town.

Whether you're putting on a pair of good-looking jeans, a straw hat, or going horseback riding, cowboy boots are a good idea.

The shafts protect the feet from mud and puddles during wet, rainy days. They keep the foot dry, fighting off foot fungus and frostbite. Yet a common question asked by foot health patients according to the Kansas City centre is whether cowboy boots cause hip pain. They suggest that a heavy boot can stretch and pull your ligaments which can therefore cause the painful inflammation of the tendon or the tendon sheath which in turn may lead to hip pain.

Let’s talk a little bit about hip pain and the causes before we circle back on the details about cowboy boots and hip pain…

Causes of Hip Pain

Let's have a look at some of the conditions that may cause hip pain.

Especially in older adults, Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are among the most common causes of hip pain. What follows arthritis? First, an inflammation of the hip joint. Second, the breakdown of the cartilage that cushions your hip bones. The pain only gets worse!

Tendonitis

Tendinitis is inflammation or irritation of the tendons, which are the thick bands of tissue that attach bones to muscles. It's usually caused by repetitive stress.

Any form of repeated activity that could strain the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that support the hips can cause hip pain. When they become inflamed due to strain and stress, they can cause pain and cause hip problems with movement.

Hip Labral Tear

Hip labral tear. Along with cushioning your hip joint, your labrum acts like a rubber seal or gasket to help hold the ball at the top of your thighbone securely within your hip socket.

A rip in the labarum that follows the outside rim of the socket of your hip joint will cause hip pain. People who perform repetitive twisting movements are at higher risk of developing this problem.

Cancer

Tumors and cancer are known to cause hip pain. Tumors can cause pain in the hips, as well as in other bones of the body.

Avascular Necrosis

Avascular necrosis (also called osteonecrosis), which is caused by a hip fracture or dislocation, or from the long-term use of high-dose steroids (such as prednisone). It can lead to irregularities in blood flow.

Do Cowboy boots cause hip pain?

It is generally not known for certain if cowboy boots can cause hip pain. Perhaps any shoe that puts pressure on the ligaments and muscles can cause pain in the hip.

Cowboy boots have flat, thin soles that provide no arch support which is necessary when treating foot health deformities leading to common painful conditions like plantar fasciitis. In general, ankle-high, knee-high, and thigh-high boots may feel comfortable on your feet when walking but may be affecting you in more ways than you could guess.

Boots that don’t have a lot of room to bend and flex at the ankle or on the ball of the foot will strain the muscles throughout your entire body leading to hip pain.  Tight around your calf, they create undue strain. You may feel pain in your back, knees, hips, or neck.  Leg cramps and shallow breathing too. To relieve yourself, what do you do?

Twisting and straining your body, you unconsciously try to accommodate for the lack of flexibility at the ankle and sole. However, do all cowboy boots create these problems that may lead to hip pain? No.

Choose The Right Pair Of Boots

Choosing the right pair is critical for your foot health. But what kind of cowboy boots? According to Mayo Clinic, according to our studies on the causes of hip pain, pressure on the ligaments and muscles can cause hip pain.

Choose a boot that provides your foot with ample cushioning and puts little or no strain on the tendons and ligaments muscles. The boots you decide on must give your foot & heel ample cushioning with enough arch support. They must also protect the tendons and ligaments. Your boots should be roomy at the ankles and calves, and if they go over your knee, at your thigh level as well.

Any podiatrist or chiropractor will tell you that boots (and shoes) play a huge role in the amount of pain we suffer throughout our muscles and tendons. A medical intuitive: if your ankle can’t bend, the ligaments that rise up the leg get strained, they then pull on the hips and lower back, leading to a crunching of the spine and ultimately to stress on the neck and head, causing greater problems than simple hip pain.

Any strain on the body can turn into a chronic condition after repeated wear and tear.

According to the American Podiatric Association, doing any kind of strenuous activity with your cowboy boots can put stress on the tendons and ligaments.

Remember to purchase the right Cowboy boots for you. Some brands are often better than others. If we can get the right kind, and use them well, we could be free from the causes of hip pain!
